I was born and raised in Bristol, yet I didn't really know about Banksy's works around the city until me and my wife took an audio tour. We went around places and streets I recognised well, but it wasn't until I looked properly that I saw the artwork as it was meant to be seen and considered their deeper meanings. It was actually very interesting looking at my birth city in a different light.
It's interesting that you grew up in Bristol but didn't know much about Banksy. I only lived there for three years whilst I was at uni, and I felt I kind of knew about his works straight away. I can't quite remember exactly how. It was just sort of known. It's what started to get my interested in street art, I'd say.
